Frequently asked questions
Can Smartsheet copy a cross-sheet reference to another sheet natively?
No. Each cross-sheet reference must be configured through the Insert Reference dialog from scratch. Grid Tools adds copy and paste so references can be transferred between sheets without re-entering the source, range, and name.
Does copying a reference also copy any formulas that use it?
No. Grid Tools copies the reference definition only — the source sheet, range, and name. Formulas that reference that name must be added to the target sheet separately.
What happens if the source sheet the reference points to is not accessible from the target sheet?
Smartsheet requires the user to have at least viewer access to the source sheet for a cross-sheet reference to be active. If access is missing, the reference will show an error after pasting, the same as it would after manual creation.
Can I paste a cross-sheet reference into multiple sheets at once?
Grid Tools pastes into one sheet at a time. For applying the same reference to many sheets, use the Bulk Cross-Sheet References feature, which is designed for that workflow.
