Smartsheet Jump to Column

Smartsheet has no column search. On wide sheets with 30, 50, or more columns, finding a specific column means scrolling horizontally until the header comes into view. There is no keyboard shortcut, no column picker, and no way to navigate directly to a column by name.

Without Grid Tools

The daily workaround

Scroll horizontally to find columns
Users scroll right across the sheet, reading column headers one by one until they locate the column they need.
Remember approximate column position
Frequent users memorise roughly where columns live so they can scroll to the right region faster — a workaround that fails when sheets change.
Use Ctrl+End to gauge sheet width
Some users jump to the last cell with Ctrl+End to understand how wide the sheet is before hunting for their target column.
Ask a colleague
On unfamiliar sheets, users ask whoever built the sheet where a specific column is rather than spending time searching.

With Grid Tools

How Grid Tools handles it

Search by column name
Type part of a column name in the Grid Tools search box and matching columns appear instantly.
Jump directly to the column
Click a result and the sheet scrolls to that column immediately, placing it in view without manual scrolling.
Works on sheets of any width
Handles sheets with dozens or hundreds of columns as fast as sheets with ten.
No sheet structure knowledge needed
New users on unfamiliar sheets can find any column by name without knowing where it lives in the layout.

Frequently asked questions

Does Smartsheet have a built-in way to search for a column?

No. Smartsheet's Find/Replace (Ctrl+H) searches cell values, not column names. There is no column-name search or column navigation shortcut. Grid Tools adds a dedicated column search with direct navigation.

How many columns does Jump to Column work with?

It works with any number of columns. The search filters results as you type, so even sheets with 100+ columns are navigable instantly.

Does Jump to Column work with hidden columns?

Grid Tools shows all columns in the search results, including hidden ones. Jumping to a hidden column will scroll to its position in the header row.

Can I use Jump to Column with the keyboard only?

Yes. You can open the search box, type a column name, and select the result without using the mouse, keeping your hands on the keyboard.
