Smartsheet Resize Columns

Smartsheet has no bulk column-width control. Resizing columns requires dragging each header border individually — a slow process on wide sheets with dozens of columns. There is no way to set a precise pixel width or apply a uniform width to multiple columns at once.

Without Grid Tools

The daily workaround

Drag each border individually
Users drag the right edge of every column header one at a time, repeating the action across all columns that need adjustment.
Estimate widths by eye
Without a numeric input, column widths are guessed visually, leading to inconsistent sizes across the sheet.
Re-do after adding columns
Every newly added column arrives at the default width, so the whole manual resize process restarts for the new column.
Scroll to check consistency
After resizing, users scroll the full width of the sheet to verify that columns look uniform before sharing with stakeholders.

With Grid Tools

How Grid Tools handles it

Set width numerically
Enter an exact pixel value to apply a consistent width rather than guessing by dragging.
Resize multiple at once
Select a group of columns and apply the same width to all of them in a single action.
Fit to content
Auto-fit column width to the widest cell value so no content is clipped or padded with excess space.
Works from the Grid Tools toolbar
The resize control lives in the Grid Tools toolbar overlay inside Smartsheet — no need to leave the sheet or open a separate app.

Frequently asked questions

Does Smartsheet have a built-in bulk column resize?

No. Smartsheet only supports resizing one column at a time by dragging its header border. Grid Tools adds a numeric width control and multi-column resize.

Can I set an exact pixel width for a Smartsheet column?

Not natively — Smartsheet uses drag-only resizing with no numeric input. Grid Tools lets you type a precise width value.

Does resizing columns with Grid Tools affect formulas or data?

No. Column width is a display setting only. Resizing does not change any cell values, formulas, or column types.

Can I resize all columns to fit their content automatically?

Yes. Grid Tools includes a fit-to-content option that sets each column's width based on its widest cell value.
