Smartsheet Select Row Range

Smartsheet has no native way to select a precise range of rows by number. Selecting a large contiguous block — such as rows 200 through 450 — requires clicking the first row, scrolling while holding Shift, and hoping the scroll speed does not overshoot. On sheets with thousands of rows, this process is unreliable and often takes multiple attempts.

Without Grid Tools

The daily workaround

Click-scroll-shift selection
Users click the first row header, hold Shift, then scroll down the grid to reach the last row — frequently overshooting and having to restart the selection.
Temporary filter to isolate rows
When a filter condition can describe the target rows, users apply it, select all visible rows, then clear the filter — a workaround that only works when row content is filterable.
Manual row-by-row selection
For medium-sized ranges, some users hold Ctrl and click each row header individually, which becomes impractical beyond 20–30 rows.
Repeated attempts on large sheets
Selecting rows 1,000 to 1,300 on a large sheet takes several tries because the scrollbar makes it difficult to stop at the right row.

With Grid Tools

How Grid Tools handles it

Enter start and end row numbers
Type the first and last row numbers into the Grid Tools range selector and confirm — the exact range is selected immediately.
No scrolling or drag required
Row range selection works regardless of sheet size, with no click-and-drag interaction and no risk of overshooting.
Selection ready for bulk actions
Once the range is selected, standard Smartsheet row actions — delete, move, copy to another sheet — apply to the full selection.
Works on any sheet size
Select rows 5,000 to 5,200 as easily as rows 10 to 15, without scrolling to that position first.

Frequently asked questions

How do you select a range of rows in Smartsheet?

In native Smartsheet, you click the first row header, hold Shift, and scroll to the last row. Grid Tools adds a numeric range selector so you can type the start and end row numbers directly.

Can I select non-contiguous rows with this tool?

Grid Tools Select Row Range selects a contiguous block of rows by number. For non-contiguous selections, use Ctrl+click on individual row headers in Smartsheet as usual.

Does the selected range work with Smartsheet bulk actions?

Yes. Once the range is selected via Grid Tools, all standard Smartsheet row actions — delete, move, copy to another sheet — are available through the right-click menu.

Does this work on filtered sheets?

Row range selection uses absolute row numbers. Rows hidden by a filter are still part of the selection by number — visible rows within the range will appear selected, and hidden rows will be included when bulk actions run.
