Smartsheet Set Capitalization

Smartsheet has no built-in text case formatting. When data arrives from imports, form submissions, or manual entry, capitalization is inconsistent — some entries are ALL CAPS, others are all lowercase, and project names or task titles are mixed. Fixing this by hand, cell by cell, is slow and error-prone on sheets with hundreds of rows.

Without Grid Tools

The daily workaround

Cell-by-cell manual editing
Without a bulk tool, fixing capitalization means opening each cell and retyping or correcting the text one at a time.
Formula workaround columns
Users add helper columns with UPPER(), LOWER(), or PROPER() formulas, copy the results, paste as values, then delete the helper column — a multi-step process for every cleanup.
Copy-paste via external tools
Some users paste columns into Word or Google Docs to run a case-change, then copy results back into Smartsheet and realign data.
Inconsistent data in reports
Mixed capitalization in task names or contact fields makes reports and dashboards look unprofessional and can break text-match filters.

With Grid Tools

How Grid Tools handles it

Select cells, apply case
Highlight any range of cells and choose the target capitalization style — the change applies to all selected cells at once.
Multiple case styles
Choose from UPPER CASE, lower case, Title Case, or Sentence case to match your sheet's conventions.
No helper columns needed
Grid Tools applies the case change directly to cell values without formula columns, intermediate steps, or clipboard gymnastics.
Works across rows and columns
Select a single column, multiple columns, or an irregular cell range — the capitalization change applies to the full selection.

Frequently asked questions

Does Smartsheet have a built-in capitalization tool?

No. Smartsheet does not include any native text case formatting. You can use formulas like UPPER() or PROPER() as a workaround, but they require helper columns and manual cleanup steps.

What capitalization styles does Grid Tools support?

Grid Tools supports UPPER CASE, lower case, Title Case, and Sentence case. Select your target cells and choose the style from the Grid Tools toolbar.

Can I apply capitalization to an entire column at once?

Yes. Select all cells in the column and apply the capitalization style — Grid Tools updates every selected cell in a single action.

Will this affect cells with formulas?

Grid Tools applies capitalization to text values in cells. Cells containing formulas that produce text will not be modified — only cells with direct text values are changed.
